Rimmel London 'The Max' Vinyl Lipgloss Campaign

'Get the London look'

Having watched an episode of 'Goks Clothes Roadshow' on Channel 4 on demand here, i noticed a sponsorship sequence for a Rimmel advertising campaign. This led me to research a little deeper into the product and the campaign.

'Get inspired by this London lovely. Georgia May Jagger looks oh-so-glam in our new Advert for Vinyl Max Lip Gloss. Managing to be both bold and sexy, she turns up the volume to a voluptuous new level. Totally Georgia….totally Rimmel.' - Taken from the Rimmel website.

This is borrowed interest at its best. The company are using Georgia May Jagger, a celebrity face, to catch the eye of her fans - not just fans of the Rimmel company. I have before read that Advertising companies should be careful when using a celebrity face to advertise their products, because they may do something which gives them bad press and a bad reputation, but because Georgia isn't necessarily an A-list face it is highly unlikely that her persona would hit the news stands for negative situations which could affect the companies campaign.

Rimmel London advertising from Denis Mallon on Vimeo.

This is a web pop up - Designed by Denis Mallon for Rimmel.

Although this isn't for the same campaign, it is for the same company and selling a similar product. If found at the time of the 'Max Vinyl Lipgloss' advertisements then it would feature the recurring theme that the other products have, i.e Georgia May Jagger and the Great British flags in several colours. Because i can't find one for the max campaign, i will have to do further research into lots of similar web pop ups when it comes to making mine for my ancillary product - although, i will want them to be more to do with high street fashion.
I liked the pop up because it doesn't try to trick or any the consumer of the advertisement - it is aesthetically pleasing and has a distinct theme of its own, although is clearly a standard rimmel campaign. It says 'put someone under your spell tonight' on one of the stills and i would like to predict that it was brought out around the time of Halloween - linking it to current events and raising sales (But i don't know this for sure!)
The logo and model/make up simple pictures makes it typically Rimmel and most people know of the brand and would recognise this. It does a slight zoom on the product, and at the end invites the consumer to go ahead and 'get the look' which means going to the website through a simple link which would open in a new web page tab.

Television Advertisement

This is the main television advert used for the 'max' vinyl lipgloss campaign and there are two main things i notice - Georgia May Jagger and the theme of London (and 'getting the London look'!)
The advert starts with a zoom of London, where famous landmarks such as the London eye make it noticeable - this is a clear link between the slogan and the target market the advertising company are trying to portray. Georgia is then shown on a London rooftop with a DJ set and wearing the lipgloss - making it clear this is a make up item made to be worn when going out and getting dressed up. The voice-over then suggests a few selling points of the product whilst Georgia is shown dancing around and modelling the lip gloss. Georgia is a good celebrity/model to choose for this sort of campaign because she is attractive and has very full lips, which need to be the main selling point for this advert in-particular.
Links are made back to the nightclub theme, when the voice-over says 'pump up the volume' which is a play on words because you can pump up the volume of sound and also increase the volume of your lips with the product being sold. Also featured is a pink disco ball.
15 seconds into the advertisement we see this..

This image looks like a combination of London landmarks and the product being sold, but the fact that the largest, and also the central image  is of the lipgloss rather than a landmark may show how Rimmel is taking over and creating what the 'London look' is - or it may just be a combination of how Rimmel and London are combined to create it.
I'm not sure either way - but i found the composition of this very interesting.
we finish the advert with Georgia blowing a kiss, enhancing the lip gloss she is wearing - and then the Great British flag created with the different colours that the product comes in, showing more intertextual references and therefore gaining a larger target market for the product.

Sponsorship Sequence

Below and to the left above are two screens print from 4OD which are seen when watching goks clothes roadshow - where the 'max' vinyl lip gloss campaign features as a sponsorship sequence. It has the continued theme as do the other advertisements - the Rimmel Logo,  disco, London and the Great British Flag.
The beginning has a lollipop running along similiar lips to those of Georgias, and the lolly is changing different neon colours - continuing the 'dicso' theme, before some more quick vox pop extreme close up shots feature of ladies wearing the lip gloss and blowing kisses and licking their lips as the voice over says 'rimmel lip gloss sponsors fashion on 4'. Georgia herself isn't mentioned in this sequence - but it is probably because of how short the sequence needs to be - this one in particular is just under 10 seconds long (but still manages to fit in 'get the london look'. There is also a logo saying sponsored by Rimmel London on the web page.

Questionnaire

I have used google documents and created a questionnaire which features questions that will open my eyes to what my target audience will really take notice of when absorbing my main and ancillary products through the media.

Defining and Researching my Audience

I am in the process of creating an online questionnaire which i will post onto various social networking sites.
However, i have decided that i need to do some one to one primary research, i.e using focus groups and creating interviews ect. which will add an interactive element and therefore let me achieve not only stats and figures, but an in depth knowledge of what my market really thrive.

Research into the Advertising Industry and campaigns

I have visited my Sixth form Library and taken out a book about Advertising and Marketing, because before i start making decisions about what i need to include in my advertisements i need to create a plan, therefore i have looked at which job roles are involved when creating an advertising campaign. Here is my powerpoint presentation, which i have used Slideshare to upload.

Technological Determinism Theory

I have been meaning to write up this post for a couple of days now, it is about the Technological Determinism Theory, a subject we spent a 2 hour lesson getting a clear idea of what it is exactly. We viewed a presentation our teacher had made of her life in technology, it said that Technological determinism is a reductionist theory that presumes that a society's technology drives the development of its social structure and cultural values. Here is a screenshot of some of the slides;

'I can express a preference, but have less choice'

'As a society, we multi task with technology'

'Apple, for example, has created a need for a product no-one needed.'

The theory was thought up by Marshall Mcluhan in 1962, it was said that media technology shapes how we as individuals in a society think, feel, act, and how our society operates as we move from one technological age to another (Tribal- Literate- Print- Electronic).

I am now going to think about my life through technology and create a presentation which i will name, 'My life determined by technology' i will then consider Meta-theoretical Assumptions and upload to my blog shortly.

Set Brief 3!

After mentioning it at the bottom of my last post, i thought it was about time i mentioned my idea for which is hopefully going to be set brief 3, 'An advertising package for a new product or service, to include two TV advertisements, together with two of the following three options:

  • A radio advertisement;
  • A TV programme sponsorship sequence;
  • a web pop-up.
So, my idea really comes from something relatively new to the fashion promotion scene; short advertising films. As a short example, this is a video made for the launch of the Kate Moss Autumn/Winter collection for Topshop, Produced by Pretzel Films..

Kate Moss from DYPKA on Vimeo.

Along with this main item i will create a recurring theme through a sponsorship sequence for something i will decide when i know the branding of my own promotional product, and then either a web pop-up or a radio advertisement. This is just a rough idea so i don't forget more than anything! Also, it will be nice to be able to refer all, if not a large percentage of the work i do in lessons back to this idea.

Signs & Semiotics (Seminology)

'Semiology is an approach that can be used to understand how media texts make meaning for their audiences. The approach can be applied to all forms of media texts from newspapers and magazines to documentaries and soap operas. Semiology provides a way of thinking about media texts.'

dictionaryThe wording above has been taken from a fact sheet given to me electronically as it was used as a nice summary of our lesson last week, the same lesson we also learnt Denotations and Connotations. In the fact sheet i found some points about semiotics. I am going to begin with a brief description of how signs, being essentially the way information is communicated within a media text, and how in the media industry because every sign that we see has been carefully chosen by the producer it means therefore that we need to accept that they have a meaning and/or a specific purpose. For example, the image to the right hand side of the screen. At first glance, the signifier of the scales may represent health, along with the clinical colour scheme, but definitely are a sign associated with people who are concerned about their weight. You would probably not have guessed i found it on a website featuring a piece of journalism about pro-anorexia, until you looked closer and read that the scales infact say 'eat less, eat less, eat less'. I would have thought the image was positive, or sent out by the NHS to promote healthy living, not anorexia.

This is something that i should be aware of when making my whole practical coursework piece, but more when creating either my radio advertisement or web pop-up depending on where my work takes me.

Informative!

I was browsing vimeo and decided to type in 'asos marketplace'. Fortunately i came across this brilliant video! It really highlights through its use of visuals exactly how the marketplace works and the thoughts behind it, but also how many different media technologies are used within this idea. I found it really really interesting so thought i would share it on here. Also, after todays lesson (which i will be posting about ASAP!) it began to hit me exactly how many of the different ways of access to things like the asos marketplace there really is. Luckily i found the video on youtube also so i was able to post it onto my presentation, however when showing it in school i will not be able to see the video, so thought i would embed the vimeo video on blogger also. Here is hoping it is an interesting for others as it is for me :)

Basic Definitions of Denotations and Connotations.

In Tuesdays' media lesson i worked with Kieron Marchese, and we were given a sheet of paper with numerous photographs on which i believe Kieron is going to scan on for me to pinch and apply to my blog asap. Basically, they featured a collection of women and a collection of men. We were then asked to write what we could see in the pictures, and then what we thought they were trying to say about the person or figure shown. This is the difference between connotation and denotation;
Connotations are ideas or feelings that are implicated - 'the implied or resultant meaning'
Denotations are what we can physically see in a picture or image.
for example, out of this context, the word home would be a denotation, and from it could come connotations in the form of a place of warmth, comfort and affection.

First Presentation

I have chosen to collate information about online fashion store ASOS - it was an instant and easy choice for me as i receive weekly emails and seasonal magazines from themselves. I have 'liked' the facebook group and follow the twitter page, i feel that over the past few years the company have grown with the promotional fashion retail market. There are a great deal of exhibition and distribution methods used, however, i have picked a specific few to talk about on my prezi which is in working progress and will be posted when it is finished, i will then hopefully post a short evaluation on how the research i endure has helped me progress further and produce a successful (or not!) presentation.
